HAS POPE FRANCIS MODIFIED THE PAPAL CASSOCK?

We know that Pope Francis wants to live simply. He drives a stripped down, sub-compact Fiat to Brazil and it doesn't even have power windows and I know this as I saw the Holy Father crank down the back window himself. The Holy Father's shoulder action in this regard was unmistakeable! I doubt if the youth today at least from the USA would know what to do with a window crank on their passenger door!

Now you know I look at details. And another thing I notice, if you look at the older photo of Pope Francis' cassock above is that that extra layer of stylish buttons on his arm above the elbow is not present on the cassock that the Holy Father is wearing in Brazil.

What do you make of it?

I'm not surprised that Pope Francis has ditched the cassock with upper half sleeves (which was reintroduced by Pope Benedict), as it must be pretty hot and cumbersome. He didn't wear it for several of his summer Vatican audiences too.

He ripped them off on the torn Naugahyde upholstery when he rolled own the window.

He gave them to the poor to hold up their pants.

Maybe once we sort out this poverty problem, we can get back to working on our eternal salvation...?

I personally like what he is doing concerning the poor, economically. I think the tendency is for people to think he is talking about each of us. He probably is, to some degree. But the preening, posturing, entitled rulers of this planet and their supporters should be embarrassed by their arrogant and conceited ways. The way to scare the pants off the ruling class is to disaffect their lap dogs in the permanently poor parts of our society. Once the poor realise they being kept poor to get their vote they may start to understand what real poverty is.

rcg, I can agree with that. What I am reacting against is the setting up of a false dichotomy wherein these various aspects of the Christian life are set against one another when, in fact, the are to be harmoniously pursued, just as with all virtue.

I don't know if the pope's doing so is intentional or not. At the very least, he is being negligently ambiguous.

Anonymous at 1:13 is correct--Pope Benedict XVI had revived the version of the papal cassock with the buttoned upper sleeves. I don't recall seeing JPII wearing it.

I had noticed the late Bishop Sheen wearing the upper sleeve style when watching old episodes of "Life is Worth Living" and then noticed it when Ratzinger began wearing it after becoming Pope. It may be a purely practical or comfort thing but then again the use (or non-use) of this style may be a subtle way of "telegraphing" a message of priorities and perspective.

If you really want to help the poor, turn the effort over to the private corporations and financial management firms across the nation. Let CEO's and CFO's who know about money and money management do the job. Provide them with tax and profit incentives, and get the government the Hell out of the way. Then, don't whine when these corporations use competition and free enterprise principles to both make money and help the poor. The corporations will develop viable ways to verify and account for how the money is spent, eliminate fraud, and insure that the money goes to truly improve the lives of the real poor and not just to by Shondell a new Eldorado with wire wheels and a sound system or Shanika a video console and 500 games.
Also, under corporate management, the truly poor in Appalachia and on Indian reservations or those LEGAL immigrants living in squalor in the SW US will get equal attention and support with the howling, faux-poor Obama constituency in the large urban centers.
It will never happen because it makes too much sense and would take power from the race baiters and jaded, incompetent senators and congressman who are evenly distributed on both sides of the aisle in DC, most of whom could not pour p*ss out of a boot if it had directions on it.

You silly traditionalists better go back to parochial school - and I'm not talking about a school run by the pedophile Marcel Maciel's cult, the 'Legionaries of Christ.'

The cassock - or "choir dress" - that the last ten Popes have worn, as well as each and every bishop, archbishop, and Cardinal since the 1800s, is known as a 'simar.' It consists of a cassock with the buttoned half-sleeves topped by a mozzetta, with the waist enclosed by a flat band sash in the correct liturgical color.

Do some research before posting here and looking like fools.
