IT IS HOW HE SAYS IT IN ITALIAN THAT CAUSES THE ITALIANS TO LOVE POPE FRANCIS. HE USES THE ITALIAN LANGUAGE AS PEOPLE IN ITALY SPEAK IT TO ONE ANOTHER AND WITH ALL THE ITALIAN HUMOR!

Italian spoken by Italians and to one another in a familiar way is how Pope Francis uses Italian. It isn't formal or stiff. It is Italian and with that dry Italian sense of humor conveyed by language and gesture.

Fortunately there are English subtitles for this anecdote the Holy Father tells the Wednesday audience yesterday, but the English simply doesn't do justice to the Italian spoken and the way it is spoken:

Parents, especially helicopter parents, who indulge their children in the worst kind of way, listen to what the pope says and become a good parent!

I don't know which is worse, psycho-babble or McDonald-babble.

Do Italians really love Francis? I've heard more than one account, and seen more than one photo of his papal audiences really thinning out. I guess the Italians finally started asking the question other faithful Catholics are asking..."Is the pope Catholic?"

Gee, it's to bad he didn't do that with the LCWR. They will continue spreading error and causing scandal and nothing was done. But the Franciscans of the Immaculate continue to be crushed. And how many orthodox bishops have been removed because of a mistake yet someone like Cardinal Daneels who it was proven actively protected pedophiles is exalted. His words are empty and shallow. The theatrics are cheap and below the dignity of a pope and he doesn't mean them.

Well, it made me laugh! And the pope is quite right to highlight the strange behaviour of modern parents, who feel that their dignity is affronted if someone criticises their little darlings. These days, it doesn't even stop when children leave home: I teach university students, and am always amazed by the number of parents who intervene if they feel their (supposedly grown-up) child has been hard done by.

Most people who attend the Wednesday audience and mega Masses in St. Peter's Square are not Romans but rather pilgrims and tourists. There are peak seasons for these two groups and lesser seasons. It also depends on the Catholicity of the people touring with Catholics more apt to spend hours waiting in the square for a Mass or audience to begin.

In my opinion, his manner of speaking is one of his most off putting characteristics. Along with his symbolic public gestures, I find his speaking style to be shallow and contrived.

His manner of being Pope is what is most off-putting to me...

Good grief! Even when Pope Francis says something one would expect conservatives (sorry, so-called conservatives) to agree with, the Francis haters look for something negative. This reminds me of their attitude towards another public figure, although I can’t quite put my finger on who that might be.

@jolly jansenist,
Well, I can't disagree with you there, and I think part of it is the timing. It's quite painful to read a news article on how the Faith is disintegrating throughout the western world, or how Christians are being mass murdered in Africa and the Middle East. And then to flip over to another story and read "OMG you guys, the Pope said "Godspray", or "little green men", or told a funny story, isn't that oh so cute!"

The politicization of Catholic clergy, be they popes, bishops, priests or deacons is perhaps the most damnable aspect of the heterodox right wing's spirit of Vatican II.

Angry Augustinian said...

Fr, a Pope who embraces global warming, attacks capitalism, supports Third World dictators and you accuse Catholics of politicization. Please send me some of what you are drinking...

This Pope just appointed radical Leftist, aggressively pro-homosexual Fr. Timothy Radcliffe to head a major council. This so-called Priest says that homosexual acts are a way of 'self-gifting" ourselves (whatever the Hell that means) and that such acts can express God's image in us. Now, please, any defense of this Pope by anybody is laughable and only makes the Church and the Priests who defend this poseur a laughing stock. Now, excuse me while I go "self-gift" myself until I need glasses. I guess that is ok now, too.

Tomorrow Ireland will make homosexual "marriage" the law of the land. It well may be remembered as the official date for the end of Western Civilization.......and Francis is silent. I guess he is too busy worrying about approving a ghost written document about saving trees. It's to bad defending life or defending marriage don't merit an encyclical. But it's us Traditional Catholics who have it all wrong. No. He is wrong.

McDonald - You're the "instapundit" in these parts, hyperbolizing and politicizing everything from organ music to inviting Baptists for tea.

Don't blame others for what you do every day on this blog.

Inviting Baptists for tea…non-alcoholic tea, of course.
Hey, know why Baptists won't have sex standing up…it looks too much like dancing...

Father McDonald

I have been following your blog and your comments at PrayTell also for some time now. I believe you are a sincere, good priest. It is obvious that you love the Church and were I not be living hundreds of miles from your parish I am sure I would like to attend Mass with your parishioners. They are lucky to have you as their pastor.

Having said all of the above, I think you should now suspend your blog and very possibly discontinue it. My impression, true or not, is that you have been getting into subject matters on which you hold ambivalent positions. Very possibly, also, someone or someones got to your bishop and complained about your blog and the positions you have taken on various matters. Perhaps your bishop or some one ion the chancery spoke to you.

What ever is reality, your postings are clear and useful on matters of liturgy. You do not handle ecclesial politics well. Moreover, as a pastor of a congregation, you have almost no room to take independent, objective positions because you have to keep too many interest groups happy.

Your recent comments and subject selections tell me that you may be experiencing a lot of stress. You are a good pastor. Stick to that and stop the blog. There are other blogs out there written by capable people who are not have the handicaps your position places upon you.

Please pray for me and I will pray for you and the Church.

(PS. This is a personal note to you. I do not intend it for publication. What ever you decide to do, may God bless you always.)

Just wanted to say my earlier comment was not intended to be a jab at Fr. McDonald, sorry if it came off that way Fr.

Funny, I have often wondered if there Bishop might have spoken to Fr. MacDonald. Gotta' love those Bishops…right at the forefront of placidity and placation.

Fr. Allan J. McDonald said...

Sorry to bash your paranoia about bishops and your meme about them which again is the most unCatholic thing I read in these comments. Catholics, so-called good Catholics bashing bishops in the most meanspirited way. I doubt that St. Catherine of Siena bashed the pose of her time in telling him the truth. I suspect it was not mean-spirited at all.

The fact of the matter is no one has called me on the carpet lower down than the Holy Spirit.

What has disgusted me is the post-catholic attitude coming from those who purport to be Catholic--but in reality are cut from the same pattern as those on the opposite side of the spectrum that I deplore with equal disgust.

No, the thoughts that I post on my blog are mind, exclusively and as my disclaimer states, I represent just myself and not the views of my bishop or the diocese of Savannah and the comments that I choose to post (and yes I choose to post them, I don't have too and often I don't) are not necessarily my views either.

Your view: Priests who have children sit with their families for First Communion are stupid.

Your view: Priests who don't make children wear "white dresses and veils and shirt with tie" are stupid.

You view: Priests who celebrate First Communion at "normal Sunday Mass" are stupid.

Your view: You bishop is "dumb" for not allowing Catholics to marry at Sacred Heart Cultural Center in Augusta.

Yep, they are your views, exclusively and do not represent those of your bishop or the diocese.

If the Holy Spirit has been calling you on the carpet, as you say, you should listen and stop making scurrilous accusations against priests and your bishop.

You must oppose the free exchange of ideas about stupid liturgical practices. Sad! Censorship is not the answer.
